Oral English I

Course Description

The goal of this course is to improve your oral English communication skills with an emphasis on speaking and listening. You will also acquire vocabulary relevant for discussing topics or events in the news.

Attendance and participation - 10 points:
You should come to every class and be an active participant.

Student directed lesson - 10 points
Your group should prepare a thirty-minute oral activity for the rest of the class which should be meaningful and enjoyable for everyone. 

Class activities portfolio – 20 points
You will learn about events of the previous decade (2010-2019) by completing worksheets and song cloze exercises which are available for download from this class blog. You should keep these completed prints in a vinyl folder and hand them in to your teacher at the end of the term (during the second last lesson). They will be graded and returned to you on the last day of term.

Your portfolio is an indication of how hard you applied yourself in class. You will be assessed on
• integrity
• completeness 
• learning

Research and write essays – 20 points:
For homework you will be required to research and write about a topic for each year of the decade. These essays should be submitted to your teacher online, and since you will be asked to read them aloud to your group, the deadline for them will be one week later.

RESEARCH AND WRITE
Plagiarism Guidelines:
Don't copy sentences.
Don't copy sentences then change the words.
Strings of five words or more identical to the course may be construed as plagiarism.

Unit listening quizzes – 20 points
At the end of each unit you will have a listening quiz based on the events and vocabulary of that year. 

UNIT QUIZZES

Final presentation - 20 points
You will be required to make a three to four minute presentation about one of the topics of the decade. You will be assessed on fluency (not reading), delivery, content, and English expressions.
